Startup Building Robot 'Brain' Raises $1.4 Billion

Podcast cover

Bloomberg Technology

Skild AI is developing an "Omni-Bodied Brain," a universal artificial intelligence designed to operate any robotic hardware across diverse tasks. While robotics has historically focused on hardware, the primary bottleneck for real-world deployment is the absence of a sophisticated general-purpose brain. To overcome the lack of a "robotics internet" for data, the company utilizes a hybrid training model that combines large-scale human video observation with intensive practice in physics-based simulations. Deepak Pathak, a Carnegie Mellon professor and co-founder, explains that this approach allows a single model to control both humanoid and quadruped robots. Currently generating millions in revenue from enterprise applications in data centers, manufacturing, and security, the company aims to eventually transition these intelligent systems into consumer home environments. Skild differentiates itself from competitors by prioritizing this cross-platform "omni-bodied" capability over specialized world models.
