Dionysus and the Pirates

Podcast cover

Greeking Out from National Geographic Kids

Dionysus, the Greek god of wine and ecstasy, frequently assumed human form to observe mortal life and indulge in earthly pleasures. During one such excursion, he encountered a group of pirates who attempted to kidnap him for ransom. Rather than resisting, he toyed with his captors, manifesting vines across the ship's mast and transforming the crew into dolphins after revealing his true identity. Only Acoides, a perceptive navigator who recognized the god’s divinity, was spared from this fate. Following this adventure, Dionysus arrived on the island of Naxos, where he discovered the abandoned princess Ariadne. Their meeting blossomed into a devoted partnership, marking a rare, joyous conclusion for the princess after her abandonment by Theseus. This myth illustrates the god's penchant for trickery and his unique role in Greek folklore as a deity who actively engaged with the mortal world.
