The Pinglu Canal, a 134-kilometer waterway in southern China, establishes a direct link between the inland Xijiang River system and the Beibu Gulf, significantly optimizing regional logistics. By bypassing the traditional, longer route through the Pearl River Delta, the canal reduces shipping distances by over 560 kilometers and lowers logistics costs by 18% to 30%. This infrastructure project facilitates more efficient trade with ASEAN countries, supporting the transport of goods like auto parts, minerals, and tropical fruits. Beyond economic gains, the project incorporates advanced digital twin technology for traffic management and prioritizes environmental preservation through specialized fishways and the relocation of ancient trees. As a strategic hub, the canal aims to reshape regional supply chains, fostering industrial clusters and creating thousands of jobs while serving as a vital artery for southwest China’s economic integration.
