The discovery of the DEFUSE proposal, which outlines research into inserting furin cleavage sites into bat coronaviruses, represents a critical, under-investigated lead that demands transparency. Moving beyond partisan narratives, a truly independent, science-led commission must prioritize root cause identification over institutional protectionism. Establishing accountability and uncovering the truth is the only path to ensuring that the devastating human and economic costs of the pandemic are not repeated.
