Let Them: How to Handle Difficult People & Take Back Your Peace and Power
The Mel Robbins Podcast
Managing difficult relationships requires shifting focus from changing others to adjusting one's own approach. The "Let Them Theory" serves as a powerful boundary-setting tool, best implemented through the "Me, We, Them" framework. "Me" involves prioritizing personal well-being and identifying what remains within one's control. "We" focuses on initiating honest, vulnerable conversations about how a relationship dynamic impacts personal feelings, rather than lecturing or blaming. "Them" requires accepting others' autonomy, even when their choices are frustrating or disappointing. Common relationship pitfalls include expecting others to change, allowing their negative behavior to dictate personal reactions, and assuming others "should" act a certain way. Instead, asking whether someone is actually capable of change helps clarify expectations and reduces emotional friction. By reclaiming personal power and focusing on individual responses, it is possible to improve relationship dynamics without needing the other person to alter their behavior.
