Building resilient systems with Sam Newman

Podcast cover

The Pragmatic Engineer

Distributed systems require a shift from focusing solely on robustness to embracing graceful extensibility and sustained adaptability. Resilience is not a binary state but a degree of system behavior that evolves through human-centric collaboration and psychological safety. Core challenges in distributed architectures stem from three fundamental truths: information takes time to travel, components occasionally fail, and resource pools are finite. Idempotency, particularly through keys or fingerprints, serves as a critical mechanism for safely handling retries in unstable environments. While AI offers tactical advantages in research and code generation, it lacks causal reasoning, necessitating human oversight to avoid cognitive surrender. Effective architecture relies on clear modularity and explicit mental models, where developers prioritize business-aligned trade-offs over blindly adopting complex tooling, ensuring that systems remain maintainable and responsive to real-world operational realities.
