Narcissists lack genuine remorse, regret, or guilt, as their psychological structure is designed to repress these ego-dystonic affects. While they may frequently apologize or even cry, these actions are goal-oriented behaviors intended to preserve a shared fantasy, secure narcissistic supply, or repair a damaged reputation. Authentic remorse in healthy individuals is private and morally driven, whereas narcissistic regret is ostentatious, public, and functions as a form of virtue signaling to recruit new admirers. When a narcissist expresses sorrow, they are actually experiencing self-pity and self-recrimination over failing to maintain their grandiose narrative or sabotaging their own well-being. Ultimately, these pseudo-affects are entirely self-referential; any perceived apology is a reaction to the narcissist's own perceived failure rather than empathy for the harm caused to others.
