Narcissist Never Intimate: Intimacy Signaling, Auto-intimacy, Hyporeflexivity
Prof. Sam Vaknin
Pathological narcissism centers on a simulated form of intimacy that is actually "auto-intimacy," where the narcissist directs emotional energy toward their own false self. To achieve this, the narcissist recruits external partners as mediators, using them as conduits to interact with the false self as if it were an external entity. This process creates an illusion of profound connection for the partner, while the narcissist remains trapped in a solipsistic cycle. While psychosis involves hyper-reflexivity—where the self dissolves into the world—narcissism operates through hypo-reflexivity, where the world is consumed and digested into the narcissist’s internal reality. Consequently, the narcissist functions as a closed system, leveraging others to maintain a fragile, internal virtual reality rather than engaging in genuine, reciprocal human connection.
